Astronomy Faculty Member–Science, Engineering & Mathematics Division

Full-time, tenure track MCCC/MTA position

General Summary:

Primary responsibilities include teaching both lecture and lab sections of Introductory Astronomy, participating in curriculum review and development, college governance, advising students, ongoing professional development, and performing other college service as appropriate.

Examples of Duties:

  1. Teaches lecture and laboratory sections of Introductory Astronomy.
  2. Teaches online lecture and laboratory sections of Introductory Astronomy.
  3. Ensures teaching and course delivery methods are consistent with generally accepted best practice in the field of Astronomy education.
  4. Revises and develops new pedagogy and laboratory experiments reflective of current research and best practice.
  5. Works with Physics faculty and Laboratory Technicians in the organization, maintenance, and repair of laboratory supplies and equipment.
  6. Regularly upgrades Astronomy laboratory equipment and software consistent with current best practice.
  7. Incorporates an appropriate level of technology in the classroom and the laboratory.
  8. Reviews and updates syllabi, including the revision of student learning outcomes for Astronomy.
  9. Develops and implements new courses as needed or required.
  10. If elected, will serve as Chair of the Physical Sciences Department.
  11. Advises students.
  12. Actively participates in department, division, and professional staff meetings as well as other components of college governance.
  13. Participates in college programs and activities.
  14. Teaches Physics courses if needed.

15. Other duties as needed or assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in Astrophysics, Astronomy, or a closely related discipline; Experience in the classroom teaching of Introductory Astronomy; Experience using varied pedagogical styles; Excellent communication skills; Experience teaching a student body diverse in abilities, age, ethnicity, race, and sexual orientation.

Preferred Qualifications:

Community college teaching experience; Commitment to and understanding of the community college mission; Online course teaching experience and course development.

Compensation:

Minimum $44,874-$50,000. Actual salary will be commensurate with education and experience in accordance with MCCC/MTA Collective Bargaining Agreement. Full State benefits.

Start Date:

Fall Semester 2017
