Associate Dean - School of Arts & Sciences

Organizational Function and Responsibilities

This position plans, organizes, develops, directs, maintains, and assesses activities associated with the operations of programs, courses, and/or services across the district within the assigned School of Arts & Sciences. Arts & Sciences departments include: English, World Languages, History, Mathematics, Music, Natural Sciences (physical/chemical and biological), Physical Education, Reading, Sociology, Economics, Anthropology, Philosophy, Psychology, Political Science, Communications/Performing Arts and Journalism. This position supervises part-time faculty and provides supervisory support to full-time faculty and may also supervise professional support staff.

Essential Duties

1. Supports, designs and oversees a student-centered approach to School business processes and practices so that School operations are efficient, effective and meet the needs of students, faculty and the community.
2. Manages the program budgets of the School to achieve financial objectives and meet School needs.
3. Supports development of pathways for transfer to four-year institutions, and fosters relationships with transfer partners that ensure transferability of curriculum and student success in transfer.
4. Hires, supervises and evaluates School part-time faculty and support staff. Provides supervision support to full-time School faculty so that College employees are trained, supported, and perform with excellence, respect and integrity.
5. Collaborates with the Dean and faculty to implement continuous improvement efforts related to School operations to ensure that programs, disciplines and services are responsive to stakeholders’ needs and reflect excellence and quality.
6. Facilitates the implementation of School unit plans so that the School’s goals and strategies for future success are well-defined and implemented.
7. Establishes and maintains ongoing communication with stakeholders served by the School to identify and address stakeholders’ needs in a manner that is consistent with the College’s vision, mission and goals.
8. Supports faculty in the development of curriculum that reflects the needs of our community, business and industry, and higher education partners and to ensure that students are provided flexible learning opportunities that meet their changing needs. Manages the day-to-day operational aspects of the School in collaboration with regional campus managers, faculty, support staff and other district staff so that School operations are efficient and effective.
9. Facilitates course-scheduling processes to ensure that course scheduling reflects the needs of students.
10. Participates in professional development activities appropriate to the needs of the School to be current in the innovations and best practices and serve as a leader for the School.
11. Acts as Dean in the absence of the Dean, supports the external work and planning efforts of the School Dean to provide continuity in leadership, and aligns work towards agreed upon strategic ends.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:
• The principles, practices and technologies of the programs and/or disciplines within the School.
• The principles of the Learning College, and demonstrated ability to successfully implement the principles and techniques of continuous improvement, and principles of competency-based curriculum development, and instructional design.
• Shared governance principles, including interest-based approaches to problem solving.

Skilled in:
• Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Managing timelines and meeting deadlines.

Ability to:
• Successfully administer complex budgets.
• Supervise and lead faculty and support personnel and to lead teams in a collaborative environment.
• Promote and advance diversity as well as policies and programs related to affirmative action and equal opportunity.
• Meet and address challenges with resourcefulness and creativity and develop strategies to prioritize and achieve School goals.
