Salary Range:

$72,866 to $93,545 Entry Level Annual Salary (Academic Salary Schedule 2015-2016); Maximum Salary Potential $126,801. Note: Actual Salary placement is based on candidate's verified education and experience.

Position Summary:

This faculty position is a full-time, 100% FTE position as Counselor for Disabilities Support Program & Services in the Division of Counseling and Matriculation located at San Jose City College.

Position Purpose:

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Prepare and determine disability verification for students through observation and/or analysis of medical and psychological documentation.

• Assist students in determining appropriate academic adjustments and accommodations; consult with instructors regarding specific students and their disability related needs.

• Design individualized educational plans and authorize educational accommodations for students with disabilities.

• Assist in the development and implementation of special programs focusing on access and retention.

• Develop corrective action plans for students on probation and readmitted students that have been academically disqualified.

• Be familiar with procedures associated with matriculation and computerized prerequisite checking.

• Provide students with disabilities with academic and career counseling, assistinghttp://apptrkr.com/1010676#_msocom_1 them in preparing for vocational competence and/or establishing an educational foundation that will enable them to continue their education.

• Assist in the recruitment, orientation and registration of students with disabilities, informing them of the educational and vocational opportunities available at San Jose City College.

• Maintain current and up-to-date records of individual counseling session with students with disabilities.

• Maintain liaison with other agencies providing support services to students with disabilities including the California Department of Rehabilitation, the Regional Center for Developmentally Disabled, Veterans Administration, and other community based social service agencies.

• Assist students in seeking financial assistance and other support services.

• Participate in counseling meetings for general counselors and represent the interests and needs of students with disabilities at these meetings.

• Teach courses in assigned discipline by communicating subject matter clearly and effectively.

• Adapt methodologies for students with special needs and different learning styles.

• Demonstrate commitment to professional development, including but not limited to activities such as: participation in professional conferences, workshops, seminars, membership in professional organizations, research projects, publishing academic work, participation in statewide committees or organizations, etc.

• Demonstrate sensitivity in working with students and staff of diverse racial, ethnic, academic and socio economic backgrounds, sexual orientation, and disabilities by showing respect for differences and the dignity of others.

• Participate in faculty responsibilities such as: course and curriculum development and review, student learning outcomes and assessment, program review, committees, research and special projects as needed in the discipline/department or district.

• Attend and participate in department, division and college meetings and keep posted office hours.

• Meet record keeping obligations on time, e.g. grades, census, reports, rosters, textbook orders, and requisitions.

• Maintain and provide current course syllabi as required by California Education Code and Board policy.

• Foster a professional work and learning environment.

• Perform other duties as required by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Position Summary: This faculty position is a full-time, 100% FTE position as Counselor for Disabilities Support Program & Services in the Division of Counseling and Matriculation located at San Jose City College.

Assignment may include day, and evening responsibilities. Some workdays maybe assigned outside the eleven-month academic calendar.

This position is represented by the San Jose/Evergreen Federation of Teachers, AFT 6157.

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

1. Master's degree, or equivalent foreign degree in rehabilitation counseling;

OR

Master's degree, or equivalent foreign degree in special education and twenty four or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology, or social work;

OR

Master's degree in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology, career development, or social welfare; and either twelve or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work specifically in counseling or rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities, or two years of full-time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following:

A. Counseling or guidance for students with disabilities;

OR

B. Counseling and/or guidance in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities.

2. Demonstrated sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender, gender identity, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the students we serve and sensitivity to and knowledge and understanding of groups historically underrepresented, and groups who may have experienced discrimination.

3. Success integrating diversity as appropriate into the major duties outlined in the job description and in the duties listed in the District's hiring policy; or demonstrated equivalent transferable skills to do so.

Desired Qualifications:

1. Two years of full-time experience within the last four years in an institution of higher education, or counseling and/or guidance for secondary school students with disabilities with experience at the community college level.

2. Knowledge of assessment measures (academic, vocational, psycho-social) to include interpretation and utilization in the counseling process.

3. Skill in group facilitation and process.

4. Demonstrated competency in American Sign Language/manual communications with the deaf.

5. Strong working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act Amended, Rehabilitation Acts 504 and 508, Title V Regulations for Disabilities Support Programs & Services.

6. Bilingual abilities, desirable.
